Centennial Lecture Series
Critical Issues • Rigorous Research • Innovative Ideas
The Centennial Lecture Series was a key component of AERA’s centennial celebration. It very much reflected the Association’s fundamental commitment to connecting education research on significant issues to wide public and policy audiences across our country. AERA aimed to foster public engagement, to learn about the issues on the minds of leaders in the cities and regions of the United States, and to elevate attention to education research in policy and practice. In other words, AERA took education research on the road!
The series consisted of six lectures, each delivered by a leading education researcher on a range of critical topics including English language learners, college affordability, predictors of learning, early childhood education, urban school reform, and school discipline. Following each lecture, there was an open discussion forum that helped connect to local issues and allow attendees to participate more fully in asking questions or presenting views.
The Lecture Series took place from November 2016 to April 2017 in six cities across the United States: Brooklyn, NY; Seattle, WA; Los Angeles, CA; Oklahoma City, OK; Detroit, MI; and Boston, MA. Click on each speaker below to view more about the speakers and their lectures, and event information. Also, videos of each lecture are available for viewing.
In April 2017, AERA's Council approved to hold an additional four public lectures and forums at locations around the country in 2017 and 2018.
