Crossing the Great Divide:
College Access for Low-income and Under-Represented Minorities

Barbara Schneider is the John A. Hannah University Professor in the College of Education and Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. Author of 15 books and over 100 publications, Schneider, a past president of AERA, conducts large-scale studies of adolescents in high schools and their daily lives. Applying a sociological lens, Schneider works internationally with scholars from multiple disciplines to improve student engagement; build positive relationships among adolescents and their parents, teachers, and peers; and ease the challenges of moving from adolescence into adulthood. Serving on several policy boards, Schneider has also examined the impact of state policies on student performance, new methods for conducting research, and enhancing student and parent well-being in school and work.
